JWT Decoder

Decode and inspect JSON Web Tokens securely in your browser

🔒 Your token is decoded locally in your browser. It is never sent to any server.

About JWT Decoder

JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) are the standard for securely transmitting authentication and authorization information between services. JWTs contain encoded claims in a compact, URL-safe format. This decoder lets you inspect the contents of any JWT without needing to write code.

NewToolSuite's JWT Decoder processes everything directly in your web browser using client-side JavaScript. Your data never leaves your device, ensuring complete privacy and security. The tool is free to use with no registration required, no usage limits, and no watermarks or restrictions on the output. It works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Whether you are a developer, designer, student, or professional, this tool provides instant results without the need to install software or create accounts. The clean, intuitive interface makes it accessible to users of all technical levels, while the robust processing engine handles complex inputs accurately and efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the decoder verify the signature? +
No. It decodes the three Base64URL parts so you can read them. Signature verification requires the secret key (HMAC) or public key (RSA/ECDSA), which this tool does not handle.
Is it safe to paste my token? +
The decoding is local — your token never leaves the browser. However, avoid pasting production tokens into any online tool unless you are sure of its behavior. Use the tool for test tokens or already-expired tokens.
What is inside a JWT? +
Three parts separated by dots: header (algorithm and type), payload (claims like sub, exp, iss), and signature (cryptographic proof). Only the header and payload are Base64URL encoded; they are not encrypted.
Is a JWT encrypted? +
Standard JWTs are signed, not encrypted. The payload is readable by anyone. For encrypted tokens, the standard is JWE — a different format that protects the payload content.
Can I modify the token and re-sign it? +
Not with this tool. Decoding only. Re-signing requires the secret or private key and is done in your server application, never in a browser.
